As part of the Jubilee Year celebrations, the chalice & paten of St Patrick’s, Tarraville is travelling to Catholic churches across the Diocese of Sale. This gold-plated 1879 French chalice & paten, first used in the earliest church of the Gippsland Mission, began its journey at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sale, on 1 January during the opening of the Jubilee Year Mass.

Recently, the chalice was at St Ignatius, Neerim South, and St Ita’s, Drouin, where Fr Herman Hengel used it to celebrate Mass, continuing its historic journey.

The chalice holds great significance as it was likely first used by Fr Philip Kavanagh, the first parish priest of Tarraville. His dedication to his parishioners ultimately cost him his life in 1883, when he travelled in harsh weather to administer the sacraments to a dying parishioner.

Be on the lookout as this historic chalice and paten continue journeying around the diocese.
