Orbost, East Gippsland, August 27th, 2023

Last Sunday, the St. Colman's Catholic Church community in Orbost was graced with the presence of Bishop Greg Bennet. About 270 km from Warragul, Orbost is a peaceful East Gippsland town on the eastern end of our diocese. About twenty parishioners from this close-knit community gathered to welcome Bishop Bennet.

As the community congregated, Bishop Bennet's presence carried a sense of solace and togetherness. The day held a mix of emotions, with the community mourning for the loss of Susan Ross, a revered parishioner. Bishop Bennet extended his condolences to the grieving parishioners, recalling his visit to Susan's home a few years ago.

During his homily, Bishop Bennet urged us to reflect on who we think Jesus is to us: A friend, a brother or Companion , our saviour?

The liturgy was enhanced by the musical talents of Lisa Downey on the trumpet and Cath Cotter on the piano, joined by the harmonious voices of the parishioners themselves, creating a truly captivating atmosphere.

After Mass, the atmosphere turned social as the congregation enjoyed doughnuts, providing an opportunity to connect with Bishop Bennet.

Present amongst the parishioners were members of the parish pastoral council, Floora Smooker, Darren Downey, and Helen Donnellan, who spoke on behalf of the parish council and the parishioners. They said, "We appreciate very much a visit from Bishop Greg to our small parish community. His love and support of his flock and the personal connections to the members of our parish is so valued as is his wonderful sense of humour and warm nature. We also thank Bishop Greg for his visit to the donut shop in Lakes Entrance, on his way through".

Bishop Bennet extended his care by visiting and anointing the sick parishioners of St. Colman.

Bishop Bennet's presence in St. Colman's Catholic Church left an indelible mark, offering comfort and fostering deep reflections within the community. His visit served as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness that binds the spiritual community together, connecting one rural parish to the whole Diocese.
