Around fifty people from the Catholic Diocese of Sale and the Anglican Diocese of Gippsland gathered at The Abbey on Raymond Island, near Paynesville for an Advent Ecumenical Conversation. The day, held on Thursday 23 November . This initiative between the Anglican and Catholic communities in Gippsland commenced in 2018, has been hosted by the bishops.
The day took the form of several reflections on the Sunday Lectionary texts for Advent. These were presented by two outstanding theological scholars from Yarra Theological Union: Dr Mary Reaburn NDS, Lecturer in Biblical Studies who presented wonderful sessions on Psalm 80 and Psalm 85, two of the responsorial psalms of Advent; and Rev Dr Ross Fishburn, Academic Dean, who explored new insights into Luke's texts on the Magnificat and the Canticle of Zechariah. Each of the scripture sessions was followed by a response from Bishop Richard or Bishop Greg. There were many questions and much discussion. We appreciated the hospitality of The Abbey staff and volunteers and enjoyed the peaceful surrounds of the gardens and the shores of Lake King. Participants shared how the day had given them new and fresh insights into familiar scripture texts and that when these were proclaimed during Advent, it would be an opportunity to listen to them and take them to heart in a new way.
